Â鶹Éç proudly celebrates the outstanding academic accomplishments of our students. Each term, we honor those who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and excellence in their studies through inclusion on the President’s List and Dean’s List—two of the university’s highest academic distinctions. Students earning a 4.0 GPA achieve placement on the President’s List, while those with a GPA between 3.5 and 3.9 are recognized on the Dean’s List. For Term 254, we commend these remarkable students for their hard work, perseverance, and pursuit of excellence. Congratulations on this well-earned achievement!

Timothy Adedoyin’s Time at ANU

When Timothy Adedoyin reflects on his journey in information technology, one thing is clear: the field has transformed dramatically since he first began his studies. Now recognized as a Term 252 Trailblazer at Â鶹Éç, Timothy is pursuing a Master of Science in Information Technology (MSIT) to ensure he stays ahead in this fast-changing industry. Originally from Nigeria, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s degree in information technology, he came to America determined to upgrade his skills and academic qualifications for the future. With ANU’s courses, Timothy has not only excelled in his classes but has improved upon knowledge he already had.

Reflecting on why he chose ANU, Timothy shared how the university’s approach to education aligns with the way he learns best. “For someone like me, ANU is the best school for me. How do I mean? I am someone who is always self-taught, independent, and I really, really need my own time,” he explains. “I don’t want to go sit in a conventional classroom, especially when I want to work and be able to earn my degree.

So ANU presented the opportunity for me to learn at my own comfort, supervised and graded by the highest academic standards, and also be able to get experience from renowned professors and doctors in the program.”

For Timothy, it wasn’t just about advancing his education—it was about finding a program that fits into his life. “So, most importantly, it was the perfect fit for me [with] work life balance.”

Timothy also shared how his studies at ANU have had a direct impact on his professional life. He takes pride in showcasing his academic journey, and even small milestones have boosted his confidence and highlighted the value his workplace places on his education. “My signature for my email was updated with MSIT at the end. That made me feel great, so yeah, my workplace values it and I think it’s a great one for me, too,” he says.

One of the experiences Timothy valued most during his time at ANU was the international student residency. It gave him the opportunity to connect face-to-face with professors and peers, building relationships and insights that enriched his online learning experience. He explains that some of his favorite moments of his education come from the residency days he attended, “the interaction between myself and fellow students and instructors, and particularly I want mention Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Godlove. Those are two people who are a significant part of my life and study.”

He goes on to describe why Dr. Nathan Sullivan and Dr. Timothy Godlove impacted his study. “Dr. Sullivan works in the industry, so he brings industry experience into academics, which makes him a very great [teacher]. Likewise, Dr. Godlove – we had a lot to talk about because his experience is from the past when he was, I think, in the military, and he’s also in the academics now. So we can relate on production, implementation of IT and its original academic aspect… Beyond that, sometimes we also discuss work relationships, how to angle something, real life work relationships in class. So those discussions and the residency were actually significant for me.”

For Timothy, one of the most rewarding aspects of studying at ANU has been the diversity of the student body. Engaging with classmates from all over the world has broadened his perspective, enriched class discussions, and made his educational journey even more meaningful. “It’s the diversity and broad spectrum of knowledge that the school allows individuals to share,” he explains about what he likes most about ANU.

“Of all the schools I’ve been to [before], they have been conventional in such that it’s been people from the same region. But ANU brings everybody from all over the world – I’ve met people from Africa, from Asia, from America – all over the world. The beauty of that is a lot of these people come with their own experiences, they come with their own process of how they do things and standards. You see some differences that you can say â€I’m going to borrow how they do this over there, I’m going to use this.’”

Looking ahead, Timothy is focused on using his advanced IT skills to lead a larger organization. “The goal is to be a CTO for a large enterprise. That’s the goal,” he says with a wide smile. Timothy is confident in his aspirations for that role due to the education he’s received thus far in his life.

Would he recommend ANU to others? “I would recommend it to people who are ready to put in the work, people who are hardworking… It would be for someone who is determined to put in the work and succeed.”

Timothy’s advice to new students is to “be serious from the very first time. Set your goals and know what you want. Do not say â€oh I’ve got all the time to get up my grade.’ Also timing, do not procrastinate, you’ve got to set a strict schedule… And most importantly, I would also encourage that the student interact with others and also don’t just read the book to pass, think of how you can apply the knowledge, think about the ways you can apply the knowledge.”

The modern age is here – with nearly every adult having a smart phone in their pockets, AI in home devices, and students replacing notebooks with computers, the increase of digital touch points has changed the way many businesses, organizations, and even schools operate. The flexibility and accessibility of digital learning have opened doors for working adults, parents, and career changers who need an option that fits their busy lives. At Â鶹Éç (ANU), we’ve seen firsthand how online programs can empower students to earn a degree or diploma without putting their personal or professional goals on hold. But as with any approach to education, online learning has both advantages and challenges. There are pros and cons of studying online – for any person looking to do so, they both should be explored.

Pro: Flexibility and Convenience

Earning an education online comes with the flexibility of attending classes wherever students have an internet connection. They no longer have to rearrange their lives to fit around a traditional class schedule as learning can happen anytime, anywhere. For working professionals, parents, or those balancing multiple responsibilities, this accessibility makes education more attainable than ever before.

At Â鶹Éç, our online programs are designed with this in mind, allowing students to log in, review materials, and complete assignments on their own time. Classes are asynchronous and tailored to a student’s needs. Whether they’re studying late at night after a work shift or early in the morning before the day begins, or even in the afternoon while their children are at school, online learning ensures that higher education is within reach, no matter their circumstances.

Con: Self-Discipline and Possible Isolation

While being able to earn an education from their home, a student may come face-to-face with isolation. While many in-person colleges and universities offer ways for students to connect and meet, an online education can be a solo journey for many. Additionally, students will have to be self-disciplined in their education as they won’t have the physical reminders of going to class, being on campus, or even having physical textbooks.

At Â鶹Éç, however, students find community they might not have if they stuck with the colleges and universities near them to go in-person. “In my class, we came in [term] together so we’re all like one big family! We all want to see each other pass, we do not want to leave anyone behind… We come in together, we’re going out together,” says ANU nursing student, Amanda Bailey.

Additionally, ANU students are a group of motivated people who are looking to better themselves through education. “ANU is the place for students who want it bad, they are willing to claw for it!” Exclaims ANU MBA student, Kary Alicea. With our support services, like student advisors, career services, financial services, faculty, and peers, students always have dedicated people to ensure they complete their education.

Pro: Cost Effective Education

Another key advantage of studying online is the potential to save money. Without the need to commute, relocate, or pay for on-campus housing and meal plans, students often find online learning to be a more affordable path to earning a degree. Many courses also use digital textbooks and resources, which can reduce the cost of materials compared to traditional print.

At Â鶹Éç, online programs are designed to be not only flexible but also cost-conscious, helping students invest in their future without taking on unnecessary expenses. By removing many of the financial barriers that come with in-person education, online learning makes higher education more accessible to a wider range of learners. There is no need to pay for room and board, babysitters, gas prices, or textbooks. Additionally, all equipment that students need to earn their education, like lab kits in our health sciences courses or online resources for technology programs, are included in the cost of tuition and not an out-of-pocket fee! “When I started the program, and the teacher told us. â€yeah you have to send us the address and we’re sending [lab]kits.’ I was like, â€are you sure I don’t have to pay anything?!’ And she was like, â€no!’ This is through the program.’ I really appreciated that, it’s really helping me,” explains ANU student, Rama Alzamel.

Con: Technology Dependency and Possible Glitches

One of the challenges of online learning is its heavy reliance on technology. A stable internet connection, updated software, and access to a reliable device are essential for success. When technical issues arise—such as system outages, slow connections, or software glitches—they can interrupt learning and create frustration for students trying to stay on top of assignments. For those living in areas with limited internet access, this can be an even greater obstacle.

At ANU, the IT support team and user-friendly online platform help minimize these challenges, but it’s important for students to be prepared for the occasional hiccup that comes with digital learning. However, faculty also are accommodating to all the things that can happen in life – from technology glitching to family emergencies. When ANU student, Sarah Slone had given birth to her child, she said, “they were all very supportive, and they haven’t left me behind on anything.”

Pro: Skill Development and Instant Feedback

Online learning also helps students build valuable skills while providing opportunities for timely feedback. Navigating digital platforms, collaborating through online discussions, and managing assignments independently all foster critical skills such as time management, communication, and digital literacy—abilities that are highly valued in today’s workforce. In addition, many online courses use interactive tools like quizzes, discussion boards, and simulations that provide instant feedback, allowing students to quickly identify areas for improvement. ANU’s online programs are designed with these features in mind, helping students not only master course material but also develop the professional skills they’ll carry into their careers. ANU professors get back to students as soon as they need them

“Anytime you have a problem, you can contact administration of any sorts and they will get back to you within 24 hours,” ANU student, Harley Odom, says, “because of me being online, I can’t just walk into an office and say, â€hey, I need help with this.’ I message and wait for a response!”

Con: Quality and Accreditation Concerns

A common concern about online education is the question of quality and credibility. With so many programs available, it can be difficult for students to determine which schools provide a legitimate education and which may fall short. Some online institutions lack proper accreditation, which can affect the recognition of a degree by employers or other colleges if a student wishes to continue their education. Students may also worry that studying online will not provide the same level of rigor, interaction, or career preparation as traditional on-campus programs. These concerns make it essential to carefully research a school’s background before enrolling.

At Â鶹Éç, students can feel confident knowing they are receiving a high-quality education backed by strong accreditation and approvals. Â鶹ÉçĚýis a member of theĚýĚýand is therefore authorized to deliver distance education to students in other states and territories which participate in NC-SARA. Salem, VA — Â鶹Éç (ANU), a private institution with multiple campuses and robust online offerings across Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky, has had its institutional accreditation formally renewed by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), effective through January 2030.

At its June 2025 accreditation review, based on the school’s comprehensive self‑evaluation, the Commission Chair’s report, ANU’s institutional response, and recent progress updates. DEAC’s review concluded that ANU continues to meet the benchmarks for quality education and federal Title IV eligibility.

“Accreditation is not just a benchmark, it’s a responsibility,” said Dr. Frank Longaker, President of Â鶹Éç. “It challenges us to keep evolving, to listen to our students, and to lead with purpose. As we look toward 2030, our focus remains on innovation, equity, and preparing graduates who are ready to make a difference from the very beginning.”

Founded in 1886 in Roanoke, Virginia, ANU now provides a broad range of academic programs, including bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration, cybersecurity, IT, nursing, healthcare management, and more, as well as certificates and diplomas in professional fields. In announcing the milestone, ANU emphasizes that the renewal underscores its commitment to accessible, career‑focused education for students regionally and online.

What this means for students:

  • Stability and Confidence: DEAC’s renewal through January 2030 assures current and prospective students that ANU meets nationally recognized standards for institutional quality and integrity.
  • Financial Aid Assurance: Maintained accreditation supports ANU’s eligibility to participate in Title IV federal student aid programs.
  • Regulatory Recognition: DEAC is recognized by both the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), lending credibility to ANU’s distance education offerings.

This renewed accreditation allows Â鶹Éç to continue advancing its mission of delivering quality, career-focused education. As the university looks toward the future, it remains dedicated to supporting student success, expanding program offerings, and maintaining the high standards recognized by DEAC.

Salem, VA — August 29, 2025 — Â鶹Éç proudly celebrates a historic milestone as President Frank Longaker marks his 50th year of service as the leader of the university. Dr. Longaker’s visionary leadership endures to transform ANU from a small business school into a nationally recognized graduate level institution with a strong legacy of career-focused education.

Since becoming Chief Executive in 1975, after serving as professor and administrator at what is now the Kentucky affiliate of ANU, Longaker has overseen, and continues to oversee, decades of innovation and expansion. Under his leadership, ANU has continued to progress in meeting the changing needs of adult learners and working professionals. This goal remains the forefront of his presidency and is implemented through pioneering distant learning and through offering flexible, accredited programs in healthcare, business, and technology. He pioneered the Evolution 2086 vision of ANU, a concept that frees students and educators alike from rote methods of delivering education and outdated programs and instead encourages them to constantly focus on new and efficient delivery of programs to students wherever they are. Evolution 2086 aspires to provide a roadmap to the institution’s 200th anniversary and challenges the University community to be constantly creative and innovative in the educational process. The axiom of Â鶹Éç, ‘We Bring Our University to You,’ comes to life through President Longaker’s dedication and visionary outlook. The foresight of this vision is evidenced by the fact that over 40 countries are currently represented within the student body.

“Over fifty years ago, I made a commitment to help working adults build better lives through education,” says President Longaker. “What’s mattered most to me over the years hasn’t changed—our mission is to open doors and create opportunities. I’m deeply honored to continue this important work to current and future ANU students, and proud to have been given the opportunity to lead generations of alumni.”

During his tenure, President Longaker continues to lead the university through significant growth, including the launch of multiple campus locations, the development of online degree programs, and an unwavering focus on student outcomes. His leadership is recognized through numerous awards in higher education and business, as well as honors for community engagement and economic development. These include the grassroots student advocacy honor (Association for Private Sector Colleges & Universities TOPS Award), recognition for supporting veterans (Military Friendly School), and a Lifetime Achievement Award (Imagine America Foundation) celebrating Â鶹Éç President Frank Longaker’s 40 years of service to the career college sector. This is also along with many national recognitions, like Research.com naming ANU’s business programs as the best in America.

Â鶹Éç extends its heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to President Longaker for a lifetime of dedication, innovation, and service. His leadership not only continues to shape the university’s growth but also leaves a lasting impact on countless students, faculty, and alumni whose lives have been transformed through education.

ANU alumni recalled President Longaker’s dedication to his students during their testimonials. Cynthia Adams, who graduated in 2013 and returned in 2024, tearfully recalled interacting with him, “he said, â€I don’t have many students like you. And I just want you to know I feel honored to have you in my college.”

Rupali Patel also has kind words for the president, as during her tenure, he gave her wise words to carry in her career: “You need to hang out with the people that fit your future, not your past… I use that saying all the time… when he said that it made me focus on [my] real life experiences.”

President Longaker’s unwavering belief in the power of learning continues to guide the institution through five decades of change and progress, ensuring that ANU will remain a place where ambition meets opportunity. As the university looks toward the future, it stands on the foundation President Longaker tirelessly builds—a legacy of access, excellence, and enduring commitment to student success.

Colleen’s Paralegal Journey with ANU

Colleen Morgan, a dedicated direct support professional and employment specialist, has spent her career empowering adults with disabilities—often sharing her artistic talents by teaching art classes at work. With an associate degree in visual fine arts and a deep love for creativity, Colleen once envisioned a future centered entirely on art and giving back to her community. However, when she began to face burnout in her career path, she knew she needed a change. Colleen decided to combine this desire to help others with another lifelong passion—law—by returning to school at Â鶹Éç in the Paralegal certificate program. Her commitment, drive, and dedication to her new career path has earned her the distinct award of Term Trailblazer, nominated by her professors.

When Colleen decided to pursue her passion for law, she began by researching a wide range of schools. She needed an online program to fit her full-time work schedule and limited free time. Affordability was also a key factor, and she specifically sought out ABA-approved programs. “I chose ANU because the program works really well with my schedule, and also it was the cheapest out of all of the schools I looked at!” she laughs. “So that was the most appealing. And it was ABA-[approved]!” ANU hit every need she had for her higher education.

Starting the Paralegal program opened new ways of thinking for Colleen that deeply engaged her natural curiosity. “It definitely–I feel like once I started the Paralegal program, especially when I started legal research and writing, it kind of changed the way my brain dissected things, like the way I think. I find that really interesting… I am naturally a very curious person, I like to research and learn things. And I know that’s a lot of what Paralegals do, researching and learning about the different laws.” Reflecting on her Legal Research and Writing course, she shared:

“The way that Wendy taught us to look at the law and break it down and then look at the issue and break it down into facts, and then apply the two, at first it was really, really difficult. I felt like the class broke my brain – but in a good way!” She laughs. “It kind of rewired it, and I think that getting that skill of research and writing can carry on to all facets of your life… it only helps me be a better writer. It’s going to help me wherever I go after [ANU].”

Colleen’s curiosity only deepened as she explored specialized areas of law. “Sheri [Clark] actually recommended me to take [Estate Administration and Elder Law].” She has discovered a strong connection between laws protecting the elderly and those covering people with disabilities, saying, “A lot of the laws that cover the elderly also cover people with disabilities, so I am learning a lot about that… I am getting more information and learning more about the processes and what it looks like, and I find that interesting!”

Colleen also spoke warmly about the professors who have shaped her experience. She admires Dean Wendy Notz’s teaching style: “I liked that she was – she’s a little bit of a stricter grader, but I really appreciate professors that don’t let students take the easy way out. I like them to challenge me… I like to try to work through something and figure it out. And that way, when I do figure it out, I feel a lot better, and I feel more prepared when I do go out in the field. I felt like I learned a lot from Wendy and she’s an amazing professor.” She also appreciated Sheri Clark’s genuine care and connection with her students, as mentioned previously with her Elder Law class. “I can see that she genuinely cares for all of her students. I like that she can remember little things about students. I feel like when I would take Sheri’s classes, it felt more like a little family rather than a class while still learning a lot from her – which is nice!”

Her future goals include becoming certified both as a paralegal and as a notary. Additionally, her biggest goal is to go back to school to earn her bachelor’s degree and then go to law school. “It was always in the back of my mind, if art didn’t work out, I would really like to be a lawyer,” she muses. “Seeing the injustices that happen to people, I want to fight for people, and I think a way to do that is being a lawyer… I want to work with people who are underserved in the community.” Her love of education and learning only boosts her desire to achieve her goals.

Would she recommend ANU for higher education? She answers:

“Yeah, I would recommend ANU to a friend looking to be a paralegal. I think ANU is really great with working with adults who work full time… And I think that’s hard to find – a school that you like that also works with your schedule. And also, it’s very affordable!”

Her advice to new students is to get a physical planner. Writing down assignments, due dates, and readings helps her stay on track. “Also have [at least one] day in your week where you are setting aside time for schoolwork. That day for me was Tuesday because Tuesdays I got out of work early and didn’t have any classes. So after work, I would come home, sit at my desk, and either read, or do my discussion posts, or get assignments done – that was my day to work,” she explains, as these two tips helped her succeed in her classes.

At Â鶹Éç, we’ve been able to open new doors for students pursuing their higher education. We provide flexibility to those students with job obligations and families – all without compromising the quality of our programs. We have pioneered the idea that earning your degree online »ĺ´Ç±đ˛ő˛Ô’t mean missing out on hands-on experience. In fact, our online learners can take meaningful steps to build professional skills, grow their networks, and gain real-world experience—all while studying from anywhere they have an internet connection!

Earning your degree online »ĺ´Ç±đ˛ő˛Ô’t mean you have to wait until after graduation to start building your resume. In fact, with the right strategies and support, you can gain hands-on experience, expand your professional network, and start making an impact in your field—right now. We can walk you through the practical and proven ways our students gain real-world experience while studying with us.

  1. Pursue Internships and Externships

Internships are one of the most direct ways to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting. Many companies now offer remote internship opportunities, which means you can gain experience and make industry connections without relocating. ANU’s career services team can help connect students with internship and externship opportunities aligned with their career goals. Many of our health science programs, like Medical Assisting, Pharmacy Technician, and Radiologic Technician all require clinical training through externships to give those students the real-world experience they need to succeed. These externships happen in clinics local to them!

Be proactive. Search for internships on job platforms like Indeed, Handshake, or LinkedIn, and reach out to local businesses or healthcare facilities in your area.

  1. Take Advantage of Virtual Labs and Simulations

At ANU, hands-on learning is integrated into online programs through virtual labs, simulation software, and real-world case studies. For example, medical assisting students receive at-home lab kits that allow them to practice key skills under faculty guidance. This includes using a simulation arm to learn how to draw blood and perform injections. Programs in cybersecurity, IT, and business incorporate simulated environments where students can apply theories in practical scenarios. These tools help bridge the gap between theory and practice—without needing to be in a traditional classroom.

  1. Work or Volunteer in a Related Field

Many online students are already working while earning their degree. If you’re in a job that aligns with your field of study, make the most of that experience—treat it as an extension of your education. If you’re not yet working in your desired industry, consider volunteering. Healthcare clinics, nonprofits, and small businesses often need extra support and are willing to train passionate individuals. Volunteering not only builds your resume but also demonstrates initiative and community involvement—qualities employers value.

  1. Join Professional Organizations

Becoming a student member of a professional organization is one of the smartest moves you can make while earning your degree. These organizations exist to support professionals at every stage of their careers—including students—and they offer valuable opportunities to build connections, learn from industry leaders, and stay informed about the latest developments in your field. You can gain access to exclusive resources like industry publications, job boards, certification discounts, mentorship programs, and leadership development opportunities. Many organizations also host virtual events, such as webinars, panel discussions, and online conferences—making it easy for online learners to participate no matter where they live.

Some of the organizations students can join are:

  • Health students can join the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
  • Cybersecurity students can explore International Information System Security Certification Consortium ((ISC)²) or the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).
  • Business students may benefit from membership in The Society Human Resource Management (SHRM) or the American Management Association (AMA).

These affiliations can enhance your resume and help you stay current on industry trends.

  1. Work on Freelance or Project-Based Gigs

For students in tech, computer design, accounting, or marketing, freelance work is an excellent way to build a portfolio. ĚýIt can be more than just a side hustle as it can be used to build your professional portfolio and gain hands-on experience while still in school. Websites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer offer short-term projects that allow you to develop your skills while earning income. You can connect with real clients who need everything from website development to social media strategy and anything in between.

Even small projects count, Every freelance opportunity teaches valuable professional habits: how to pitch your skills, manage client expectations, meet deadlines, handle feedback, and solve real-world problems on your own. These soft skills—communication, time management, adaptability—are exactly what employers look for, no matter your field. They can lead to referrals, client testimonials, or long-term work relationships. More importantly, they help you grow your confidence and create a body of work that you can proudly showcase when applying for jobs after graduation.

  1. Make the Most of ANU’s Career Services

At ANU, your career journey »ĺ´Ç±đ˛ő˛Ô’t begin after graduation—it starts the moment you enroll. We understand that education is just one part of the equation. That’s why ANU’s dedicated Career Services team is here to help you turn your academic accomplishments into real-world opportunities. Whether you’re just beginning to explore your career options or actively applying for jobs, our career services team offers personalized support tailored to your goals. Need help crafting a polished resume or writing a cover letter that stands out? We’ve got you covered. Nervous about your first interview? Our team offers mock interviews, coaching sessions, and tips to help you present your best self—confident, prepared, and professional.

But the support »ĺ´Ç±đ˛ő˛Ô’t stop there. ANU also provides access to job leads, career fairs (virtual and in-person), employer partnerships, and networking opportunities designed to connect students with industry professionals. You don’t have to wait until you graduate to start building your future. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these resources early and often—because the sooner you engage, the more confident and career-ready you’ll be by the time you earn your degree. At ANU, we’re not just preparing you for the next test—we’re preparing you for the next chapter.

Studying online »ĺ´Ç±đ˛ő˛Ô’t mean studying alone—and it certainly »ĺ´Ç±đ˛ő˛Ô’t mean putting your career on hold. At Â鶹Éç, our students are proving every day that it’s possible to gain meaningful, real-world experience while earning a degree from the comfort of home. By combining flexible online coursework with internships, hands-on tools, professional networking, community engagement, and one-on-one career support, ANU students are building both confidence and credibility long before graduation. Your education is more than lectures and assignments—it’s a launching pad for your future. And with the right resources and determination, you can start gaining the experience you need to lead in your field from day one. Learn more at an.edu.

In the inaugural round of Â鶹Éç’s Bi-Annual Faculty Institutional Excellence Award, three outstanding professors have been honored: Laura Diggle, Tina Ousley, and Jean Halbeisen. Twice each year, program chairs, deans, and direct managers nominate faculty members who exemplify the core values of ANU. Nominees are recognized for their dedication to teaching and student success, their dynamic and supportive instructional style, strong communication skills, and their lasting impact on students’ educational journeys. This award celebrates faculty who go above and beyond—qualities clearly demonstrated by this year’s recipients through their unwavering commitment to their students, classrooms, and the high-quality education ANU strives to deliver.

Laura Diggle

After earning an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Assisting, Laura Diggle began her teaching career at Ivy Tech Community College. While teaching, she pursued her Bachelor of Science in Allied Healthcare Management at Franklin University, which led to her appointment as Program Director at Ivy Tech’s Anderson, Indiana campus. She continued her academic journey at Franklin University, earning a Master of Science in Instructional Design and Performance Technology, and has since begun working toward an EdD in Instructional Design Leadership.

She joined Â鶹Éç in the fall of 2018 as an adjunct faculty member and transitioned into the Health Science Program Chair role in July 2020. Currently, she serves as a Curriculum Designer, a position that allows her to collaborate across all programs and build meaningful connections throughout the ANU community.

Outside of her professional responsibilities, she enjoys coaching her daughter’s soccer team, tackling home improvement projects, cooking, watching sports, and engaging in creative pursuits.

Tina Ousley

Tina Ousley earned her Master of Science in Biology with an emphasis in Microbiology in 2004 and has since spent over 21 years teaching a variety of biology courses, including general biology, anatomy and physiology, and microbiology. A proud Kentucky native, she currently resides in the scenic Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky with her husband, an art professor.

In addition to her work in education, she is a passionate artist who enjoys expressive oil painting. She is also the proud mother of an amazing 28-year-old son and shares her home with three beloved dogs. An avid gardener, backpacker, and hiker, she recently began rock climbing with her son, continuing her lifelong love of adventure and the outdoors.

Jean Halbeisen

Affectionately known as “Mrs. H” by her students, Jean Halbeisen has been a dedicated instructor in medical billing and coding at Â鶹Éç for 20 years. With a total of 30 years of experience in healthcare, she began her career in a pediatric office, where she held roles in bookkeeping, front office operations, and patient/medical insurance administration. Her extensive hands-on experience with all major third-party payers, as well as her proficiency in both the soft and technical skills essential to a medical office environment, laid a strong foundation for her transition into education.

It was during her decade of work in the outpatient setting that Jean developed a deep curiosity and passion for the business side of healthcare—specifically coding, billing, and reimbursement. That passion ultimately led her to teaching full-time, a role she considers both a calling and a privilege. Jean takes pride in guiding students through the intricacies of medical coding and helping them recognize the vital role they play in the success of healthcare facilities. She finds immense satisfaction in their “aha” moments—when concepts click, confidence grows, and professional goals come into focus.

Jean holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Eastern Mennonite University, a Medical Office Specialist diploma, and is a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) through the AAPC.

A Virginia native, Jean lives in Bridgewater in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley with her husband of 36 years. She is the proud mother of two adult children and a loving “Grammy” to three grandchildren: a 12-year-old grandson and 10-year-old twin grandchildren—a boy and a girl—who she fondly refers to as her “baby doozies.”

Outside the classroom, Jean enjoys beach getaways to the Outer Banks, spending time with family and friends, trying out new recipes, playing the piano, watching classic movies and old TV shows, listening to the oldies, and browsing local and family-owned gift shops.
