As demand for technology grows, cybersecurity becomes more and more important to businesses and the field continues to heat up, with professions in the industry growing up to 30 % faster than most fields through 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the U.S. Department of Labor.
But cyber security is a large field, encompassing hundreds of specific job titles within several subfields. Here are just a few of the jobs your cyber security degree could help to prepare you for, according to the National Security Workforce Framework published by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE).
Software Assurance and Security Engineering: Workers in this area develop and write codes for computer applications of software following accepted software assurance best practices. Job titles include: Information Assurance Software Engineer, Security Engineer, and Systems Analyst.
Test and Evaluation: In this field, you’ll develop and complete tests to evaluate how systems comply with security requirements. Job titles include Application Security Tester, Information Systems Security Engineer, and Quality Assurance Tester.
System Administrations: If you’re a Local Area Network Administrator, Platform Specialist, or you hold one of the many other job titles in the Systems Administration branch of the field, you spend your days installing, configuring and troubleshooting server configurations to ensure they are protected. You might also manage firewalls, passwords, and other aspects of system security.
These are just a few of the many positions available to those with backgrounds in cybersecurity. Some more specialized areas, involving oversight and development or investigative duties, may require specialized degrees or experience beyond your cybersecurity bachelor’s degree.
